Surf's Up!

My friend Alec celebrated his 50th birthday in January. Since Alec loves to surf, his wife Lynne threw a surf themed surprise party for him at Duke’s in Waikiki.

The Shimizu Family at Duke’s

The Shimizu Family at Duke’s

Creating a card for Alec gave me the opportunity to dig into my retired stamps and use two oldies but goodies. I used Surf’s Up and Do the Hula to create this card.

Surf’s Up! Birthday Card

Surf’s Up! Birthday Card

The sand was created with Crumb Cake Card Stock that I ran through the Big Shot with the Sequins Textured Impressions Folder. After I ran the card stock through the Big Shot, I tore it with my hands so that the torn edge would look more like sand. I did two layers like this so I could position the surfboards in between the layers of “sand”. The large boards were made with the Surf’s Up stamp set and the small board with flowers on it comes from Do The Hula.

I textured the background to look like water using the Seaside Textured Impressions folder. The sentiment “surf’s up” comes from the retired Surf’s Up stamp set.

When you look inside the card you will see that this is actually a recordable card, another vintage Stampin’ Up! product. I just happen to have a few of these left over from many years ago.

Recordable Card

I sang a funny version of the song “Surf” and recorded it inside Alec’s card. Alec has a funny memory from when he once heard this song, so I tried to recapture that moment to make him smile on his special day. When I played the card for Lynne she laughed and told me how much she knew Alec would love this card.

And as you can see, it did make him smile!!

In addition to stamping him this card, I also stamped some toppers for the party favors. The toppers looked like this.

The wave was from the retired set Surf’s Up and the sentiment “Life is Sweeter with Friends like you” comes from a current set called Detailed With Love.

My extremely gifted and talented friend Cindy of Zoe, Hawaii, created the most adorable Surf Board cookies! Here is how they looked after we added the hand stamped topper.

We didn’t eat cake at the party because we had Hula Pie instead. Hula pie is a yummy mud pie dessert that is a must have when you are at Duke’s.

Alec is like a brother to me. We have been really close friends for many years and I feel so grateful to have he and his family in my life. I know that he is not one to want a lot of attention so I think Lynne did a fabulous job planning a small intimate gathering of family and a few close friends to celebrate him on this very special birthday.

I captured this impromptu moment where Alec gave Lynne a big hug. I know he was really thankful for all the hard work she did to bless him on his special day.

I am glad that Alec celebrated his 50th birthday knowing how much he was loved and appreciated. It was a blessing to be a part of his special celebration.

Best Day Ever (2018)

As 2018 comes to an end, I am grateful for all the wonderful memories made during this year. If I had to choose one day of 2018 to be known as the BEST DAY EVER, it would be an easy choice. I’d pick Friday, May 11th, 2018. This was the day Brett and Jess got married.

Here are some of my favorite memories from their wedding.

The night before the wedding Jess checked into the Four Seasons in Ko'olina.  The room was gorgeous and provided the perfect setting for all the bridal party to get ready together, The room was spacious, comfortable and had an amazing view of the ocean.

Bridal Party

It was so nice to see how supportive these girls were to Jess.  I feel so thankful that she is blessed with such great friends.

Just before she got dressed Jessica read a card that Brett had sent for her.  Brett knows that Jessica's love language is "Words of Encouragement", so to watch her receive a card filled with thoughtful, loving words from Brett was such a sweet moment.  Of course the icing on the cake was the fact that Brett made the card for her in my stamp studio using Stampin' Up! products.

Card from Brett

Unbeknownst to Brett, Jessica had the same idea.  A card was given to him as him as well, one that Jessica had stamped for him.

Although I wasn't there to see him receive it, I am glad that the photographer captured this moment.

Once Jessica was ready, we surrounded her to pray.  It was the perfect way to begin a day that was so special from start to finish.

One of the most special moments was when everyone left the room and Jessica set up a “first look” with Derek. It was so touching to see Derek’s reaction when he saw Jessica in her wedding dress.

He did a really good job holding it together as he walked her down the aisle.

The wedding was held next door to the Four Seasons at Lanikuhonua.  The name of this property means, "where heaven meets the earth".  I can't think of a more perfect setting for this momentous occasion.

Brett and Jessica’s wedding

Brett and Jessica’s wedding

Although I knew some of Jessica's plans.  I really didn't understand how everything was going to "fit" together.  So seeing the venue, the flowers, the centerpieces, table decor, wedding arch, etc was all a first for me.  Since Jessica is in the wedding industry I knew whatever she put together was going to be amazing and it was.   As I saw how everything was coordinated just the way Brett and Jess wanted, I couldn’t stop smiling. I had a few people come up to me and tell me that I looked so happy that day, and I really was.   It was such a special day.

As the tables were set up, the party favors were set on the table at each persons seat. My friend Cindy of Zoe Hawaii made the most adorable Peanut Butter and Jelly Cookies and I packaged them using a Stampin’ Up Acetate Box that I cut in half.

Brett and Jessica’s Reception

Here is a close up of the favors. Cindy did such an amazing job with these personalized creations. As I’ve said before about her treats, they not only look good but they taste amazing.

On the back of each box I made, there was a poem that read. “Like Peanut Butter and Jelly, Love is Sweet. Thank You for Making Our Day Complete! With Love, Pastor Brett and Jess (Nicknamed PB and J by their students) “

The reception was held at the same location as the wedding. It was an absolutely beautiful day for an outdoor reception.

My favorite moment from the reception was watching Jess surprise Brett with a special hula she had prepared for him. It was special because Jess doesn’t like to get up in front of others to perform so this was truly an act of love to bless Brett on their special day

Of course another moment filled with surprises was when Jess and Derek were doing their Father and Daughter dance

Father Daughter Dance

Their dance was interrupted when they began to rap about the wedding day to a Bruno Mars song.

Jess probably thought that all the surprises were over but Derek had one more surprise for the Bride and Groom. He called up Brett’s Dad, Norm and the two of them did a lip sync to the song, Sharp Dressed Man.

Speaking of Norm, we are so blessed that Jessica married into the Nakasone family. They are such wonderful people.

For my Christmas Card this year I used our family photo from the wedding.

I printed the photo into a 4 x 6 size and then I cropped it to 4 x 4. I then added a 1 3/4 x 4 piece of the Joyous Noel Designer Series Paper. I mounted the strip and the photo to the front of one of our pre made Whisper White Large Memory and More Cards.

I then just added a small strip of Whisper White card stock across the front with a Merry Christmas sentiment. I created the notches in the banner with the Triple Banner Punch. I used two different sheets of the Joyous Noel DSP as both matched our family photo really well.

I was glad that I could use Stampin’ Up! products to create this card that captures a moment from our favorite day of 2018.

It truly was the BEST DAY EVER!!!

Brett and Jess - Best Day Ever

Aria Studios did such an amazing job not only capturing many of the beautiful photos I’ve shared in this post but they also created two amazing videos. If you want to watch them you can click HERE to watch Brett and Jessica’s Love Story. This creative and fun video was shared at the reception. Also to see a video that highlights all the special moments of their actual wedding day and will show you many of the things I wrote about today, you can click HERE.

I hope that like me you are remembering special moments you’ve shared with family and friends over this past year. Special moments don’t always have to be attached to joyous occasions. Often its trials and difficult seasons that can produce change and growth in us that at the time don’t seem like things to be grateful for but we can look back later and give thanks. No matter what season you are in, know that as I bring this post to a close I am saying a prayer for each one of you reading this that you will be blessed with many special memorable moments that you can call the Best Day Ever in the New Year to come!

I wish you a happy and BEST blessed New Year ever!

With Aloha,

Cindy

Cookie Mama

One of the nick names I have for my friend Cindy is “Cookie Mama” because she makes the most delicious cookies that are so beautiful you don’t want to eat them! At our Home For The Holidays craft fair last weekend she introduced a new design, this double sided snowflake cookie.

Aren’t they beautiful?

Cindy is also extremely gifted at making Gingerbread Houses. Every year at our Home for the Holidays craft fair we look forward to seeing her display. I managed to take a quick picture as she was setting up her display.

Gingerbread Houses by Zoe, Hawaii

When people come to purchase her gingerbread houses they often take a long time to choose which one they want because they are all so unique and special. It’s fun to closely examine all the special little details Cindy puts on each house, they are truly a labor of love.

Cindy just celebrated her birthday. Since her birthday is just before Christmas we often combine her birthday celebration with some late night Christmas shopping.

We didn’t have a particular theme for our birthday dinner for Cindy so I decided to create a card for her that would be appropriate for the Cookie Mama that she is!

Here is what I came up with…

Cookie Cutter Christmas Birthday Card

Cookie Cutter Christmas Birthday Card

I created Cindy’s card using the stamp set, Cookie Cutter Christmas. I embellished the gingerbread cookies with Santa’s Workshop Enamel Shapes. I added three balloons that were punched out with the Balloon punch in various colors. The sentiment comes from the stamp set Calls For A Celebration.

The background of this card was created with a new product, the Dot to Dot Textured Impressions Folder..that is from our new Occasions Catalog that will be available in January.

When Cindy opened her card she smiled and thought the gingerbread cookies were so cute.

As we headed out after dinner to shop we saw these decorative red ornaments. We instantly thought of our friend Lynn who we are missing so much since she moved to Seattle. We plan on sending her these pictures and hope that when she sees them she will remember how much we love and miss her.

I am thankful for the opportunity we had to celebrate Cindy’s special day!

Happiest Birthday Wishes to our sweet and talented friend Cindy aka, “Cookie Mama”, we are so grateful for you!

Taco Bout A Party!

When I asked my daughter what kind of bridal shower she would like to have, she said "How about a Mexican themed one".  This made me so happy because I love themed events and one of my most favorite parties I've ever thrown was my son's high school graduation fiesta.  I knew that there would be so many fun ideas we could put together to make this event special for Jess.

I co-hosted this event with Jessica's Auntie Cindy as well as Jessica's Maid of honor Carrie and her Matron of honor, Kayla.

Let me begin with the invitation.

Fiesta Bridal Shower Invitation

Fiesta Bridal Shower Invitation

This card was created with Stampin' Up!'s Birthday Fiesta stamp set and coordinating framelits.  This set retired a couple years ago and sadly I no longer had it.  Thankfully, I was able to borrow it from my friend Mary who even had just enough of the Festive Birthday Designer Series Paper that coordinated with this suite for us to use too.

The front of this card featured a cactus because Jessica LOVES cactus.  Cactus are really "in" right now so we had no problem finding an abundance of cute items to incorporate into this themed celebration.

When the guests arrived at the door they were greeted by this beautiful sign that Kayla made.  Behind the sign was a life size photo of Brett (Jessica's finance) dressed as a Mariachi player, welcoming everyone with a smile.

We hung white paper picado flags everywhere!  In and out of the house and in multiple rooms.  They were so delicate and beautiful and really added a nice touch to the decor.

One of the first elements waiting for our guests was this game.  Pin the mustache on the groom where a photoshopped picture of Brett wearing a sombrero hung next to a bowl full of paper mustaches that I had made with a Stampin' Up! retired mustache framelit.

The center of the room featured a large Taco card box made from a piñata.  As well as some over-the- top, fabulous pinata cookies that my very talented friend Cindy made.  I'll tell you a little bit more about the cookies in a little bit.  Believe me, its worth the wait!

Next to the piñata cookies was this beautiful plant that my friend Teri gave to me when I was at her house the week prior.  Her yard was FULL of these beautiful Aloe plants and she helped me to pick just the right one for our party decor.

Many of the tables had these three cactus containers that we had found at Target.  We used this for decor as well as door prizes.

This table also featured a photo of the Bride and Groom to be from their engagement photo shoot.

Over the dining area we hung a fun sign made out of balloons and below the sign another life size cut out of the groom holding maracas.

We had a taco bar, carnitas, beans, rice, mexican street corn salad and a below is a photo of our salsa bar for all to enjoy.

The salsa bar had two different types of salsa made by my friend Linda who sells her salsa at many different grocery stores and specialty shops here in Hawaii.  The brand name is Island Salsa.   We had Mild Salsa and Mango Salsa.  I also made one of the largest batches of home made guacamole I have ever made.

When you stepped outside the house we had a large tent that was adorned with more paper flags and small pinatas.

The outdoor dining area also had clusters of cactus.  There were ceramic ones as well as actual live cactus plants.  There were also a couple of tiny pinatas used as centerpieces here as well.

There was another game set up in the family room.   It was a guess how many "heart" tamales game.  Whichever guest made the closest guess would take home this jar of  heart shaped hot tamale candies in a cute jar.

The kitchen table had a display of desserts.  In addition to the Tres Leches cake I made, I ordered cupcakes from my friend Corren of Charneys Cupcakes.  Corren made Mexican Chocolate cupcakes with Horchata frosting.  We also served vanilla ice cream cups with Dulce De Leche on top!  Yum!

In between my Pampered Chef three tiered stands I added two small inflatable cactus that were stuck together and had photos of Brett and Jess on them.  I added a heart that said, "Stuck On You".

I topped each cupcake with a double sided stamped image cupcake topper I made with the Birthday Fiesta stamp set.  I added a rhinestone to the center of each flower.

In this photo you can see that the cupcakes were sprinkled with a tiny bit of cinnamon, the perfect finishing touch!

When our guests stepped into my stamp studio they saw hundreds of paper flowers all displayed in large cans.  There was a sign that read, Jessica's Flower Mercado hanging above this paper garden as well as more paper picado flags.

This garden was special because many people helped to make these colorful flowers.  Even my friend Lynsay and her daughter Emily who came to visit over spring break made several.  Putting all of the special touches of this party together was definitely a labor of love!

In this same room we also had a photo booth set up.  The large inflatables were things we already had and use in our pool.  In fact Brett gave Jess the cactus one for Christmas this past year.

On the table we had props and a sign that read, "Grab a Prop and say, Queso".

I had an instamax camera out for people to use and many people took photos with their own cameras.  It was fun to capture such colorful and fun moments.

Of course many of the guests, including Jessica's Aunties wanted to take photos with the bride to be!

I love this photo of Jessica and her Maid of Honor Carrie.  Carrie and her mom Julie flew all the way from Oregon to be a part of this special day for Jessica.   Carrie's family is like a second family to Jess!  They took such great care of her while she was away at college! It was such a blessing to have them visit at this special time.

At the photo booth, I had a display of cards I made with the Birthday Fiesta products.  I had little clips on each card so people could clip their photo to a card after they took them so they'd have a little momento from the party to take home.

Oh my goodness... do you see that cookie?  Wait until I tell you more about it.  I promise you'll be amazed.  So keep reading!!!

One of my favorite things at this party was the way we served drinks.  We made a virgin margarita punch and served it in a cactus mason jar.  This was another momento we had for our guest to take home.

The punch had margarita mix, limeade, lemon lime soda, lime slices and lots of ice.  It was very cool and refreshing.

One thing I'm not sure everyone at the party even noticed was the hot sauce bottle.  We made a custom label with the grooms photo on it.   The front label read, "Brettatio, Salsa Finance", Hot Stuff.

Although the bride didn't know any of the party details, I did ask for her help with this project since she is such a wiz at photo shop!

We played some games, gave out prizes and then as everyone left we handed them one of these cookies my friend Cindy of Zoe Hawaii made.  So with the couple of "sneak peeks" I gave you above, you may have thought that it was a super cute cookie, so colorful and festive.  But did you realize that it was a "shaker" cookie?

Of course every piñata has to be filled with colorful candies so this piñata did not disappoint!  Here is what is looks like when you crack it open, that is if you had the heart to break this amazing cookie!

Not only did it look incredible but it tasted amazing as all of Cindy's cookies do!

We are all so grateful to Aunty Cindy for the amount of time and effort it took to create these incredibly creative and beautiful cookies.  I think of all the cookies and sweet treats Cindy has made, this cookie will go down as one of my favorites of all time!   Passing these out to our guests was such a sweet way to create a perfect ending to such a fun and festive fiesta bridal shower.

Jessica was so happy with everything we put together for her.  She couldn't stop smiling!   I'm glad we kept all of these details a surprise.  Even on the day of the shower, Brett led her out of the house blindfolded so she wouldn't see what we were up to.

I am glad Jessica felt so loved and so blessed on her special day!  She is so beautiful inside and out and truly an inspiration to me.  As a Mother, you hope to teach your children valuable life lessons but I feel like I have learned so much from her by the way she loves God and loves others so sacrificially!

I had a few extra supplies after the party, so I used them to create thank you cards out of our Stampin' Up! note cards.  For this card below, I took one of the extra cupcake toppers and adhered it to the top of one of the extra photo cards.

We all had such a great time and we made many lasting memories of this very special time for our family.

I hope you enjoyed hearing about this very festive and fun Fiesta Bridal Shower.  Oh, and Happy Cinco De Mayo today!  Probably the best day I could have picked to share all this Fiesta Fun with you!

Until next time!  Adios!
