Healing Hugs

My friend Shelly Matautia is a wonderful Mom. I love how her face lights up when she talks about her children. She is one proud Mama and she should be. She’s has two amazing kids and has had the privilege of watching both of them compete as college athletes in volleyball.

Her son Austin is currently a Junior at UCLA and is an outside hitter on their men’s volleyball team. Shelly would love to be at every game but since there is an ocean separating them, it makes it difficult and expensive to be there. Shelly certainly does her best to watch him in person as often as possible.

I have had the privilege of watching Austin play before and it is quite exciting. It is wonderful to see athletes so passionate about their sport. Austin is an incredible athlete and volleyball player!

A couple weeks ago, Austin was playing in a volleyball match when he got badly injured. Unfortunately, Shelly was not at that game but she was watching online. I can imagine how her heart must have felt to see her son get hurt and realize she was so far away.

Shelly immediatly dialed someone who was at the game and within minutes she was on the phone with one of the coaches and then with Austin. I’m glad she got to talk to him before he was taken to the hospital.

The diagnosis was not good. Austin had dislocated his ankle, tore ligaments in his foot and broke his fibula!

My heart just sank to hear this news about Austin. Especially since I knew he was one of 12 young players selected to play on the USA Mens World University team this summer in Italy.

Austin’s surgery went well and I’m happy to say he is on the road to recovery!

I know when unexpected situations like this happen they can bring discouragement, so I wanted to create a card to lift Austin’s Spirit and to let him know so many were thinking of him and praying for him.

Here is the card I made for Austin.

Friends and Family Volleyball Card

Friends and Family Volleyball Card

I used Balmy Blue and Daffodil Delight Card Stock, to match the UCLA team colors. I used my Basket Weave dynamic textured impressions embossing folder to create a texture that resembled a net. The Family and Friends stamp set allowed me to custom design a volleyball player image. The only problem was, Austin is 6’4! and the image from this set didn’t represent his size!

Martha, one of Austin’s aunties was here when I was making this card and she commented on how the shoes on the image could work as knee pads. What a great suggestion and it worked! I just stamped and fussy cut another set of legs and attached them to the original image. I did the same thing to the arms as well.

You can see in this close up photo how I extended the arms and legs! I also used a little bit of Sparkle Glimmer Paper to create a cast on the left leg, the leg that I thought Austin had injured. Found out later that it was actually the right leg that he hurt!! Oops!

What do you think? Do you see the resemblance?

Well, I think Austin is way cuter than the card!

Would you join me in praying for Austin as he continues to recover from this injury. He is a strong and resilliant young man and I pray that his spirit will continue to be lifted by the support he has from so many who love him. Let’s believe together for a complete and full recovery so that he can be back on the court doing what he loves so much very soon!

Get well soon #23! Sending you lots of love and long distance healing hugs!

Needle and Thread

Something that has only happened a couple times in my life, happened this year on Christmas morning! As I opened a gift from my Mom, I burst into tears!

You see my Mom is in her mid 80’s and life has been challenging for her these past few years. She is the full-time caregiver to my Dad who has dementia. My Mom is incredibly strong and extremely dedicated to caring for my Dad’s every need. In addition to all she does around the clock for my Dad, she keeps an immaculate house and a perfectly spotless car. Did I mention I gave her a car washing kit for Christmas and she was thrilled. My Mom is kind of like Wonder Woman! However, she has very little time to do things that she loves, things such as quilting which is one of her passions.

For the past few months when I passed by her spare room, I noticed that she was working on a quilt. The back of the quilt was blue fabric covered in red and orange flowers. This quilt was very “her”. I say that because my Mom’s favorite color is blue and she lights up anytime someone gives her flowers. I know that when my Dad was able, he would give her flowers often and she always loved that. I’m sure the flowers in the fabric reminded her of all those flowers plus the beautiful ones she has growing in her garden.

Here is my Mom’s latest quilt.

Even though I saw pieces of this fabric unassembled, I had no idea that she was planning on giving me this for Christmas. So, when I opened the box and saw it, I cried.

She named this quilt Nanny’s Garden. “Nanny” is what my kids call her.

As I examine each perfect stitch, I am reminded of how lovingly she put this together during a rare break in this challenging season. I felt so incredibly blessed to receive such a special gift.

The colors of the fabric inspired me to create a card that looks like a quilt to give her to say thank you. We have the perfect new stamp set in our catalog. It’s called Needle and Thread. It is a part of our Needlepoint Nook Suite. This stamp set is one of our exclusive DistINKtive stamps! You can see below how picture perfect it stamps. Just look at the details in the stitched flowers on my card.

This set can also be purchased in a bundle with the Needlepoint Elements Framelit Dies. As you can see I used one of the dies to create the stitched rectangle blocks. I also used it on the envelope and it worked out beautifully.

The stitching on the envelope went through to the back side. I wish I had a picture of my Mom admiring the envelope. She ran her finger across the stitches and looked at it with a big smile on her face. It was as if she thought I stitched it by hand. We’ll I guess I kind of did stitch it myself, but by using my Big Shot of course!!

The look on my Mom’s face when she opened the card was priceless. She said, “My Quilt”. Then she told me she better not read the message inside at that time or she might cry! It was a very touching moment.

It’s hard to see in the photo but I added some small iridescent Gingham Gala Adhesive Backed Sequins from our Gingham Gala Suite.

They provided just the right amount of sparkle on this fun quilted card.

This stamp set is one I would have never purchased. However, once I saw some card samples in person, I was sold. I know a lot of friends who in addition to stamping, enjoy working with a needle and thread and they will definitely love this set!

I am not sure if I’ve ever shared this but before I was a stamper I used to enjoy Hawaiian Quilting. I made a few small pillows and I finished one that is framed and hanging on our wall. It was fun to make those quilts but it was also very time consuming. I haven’t made a quilt in 20 years. I think its because I discovered that stamping is a much faster way for me to get the satisfaction of being creative and completing something in a matter of minutes. Quilting takes patience, something I don’t have a lot of. I am, however, working on that!

My Mom’s thoughtful gift inspired me to reexamine my schedule and work a little harder at using the free time I find to create something beautiful. Whether it be with fabric or ink and paper, I’d like to give to others the way my Mom gave to me, handmade and from the heart!

Sweet Little Hula Girl

It’s a New Year, and the start of our annual Saleabration. After taking a holiday break, I am really excited to get back in my stamp room to play with all the fabulous products we have in our new 2019 Occasions Catalog! When a new catalog comes out I often look for stamp sets that I can use to create cards that reflect the aloha spirit. So, it’s quite normal for my first cards using new products to have pineapples, palm trees or hula girls on them.

Here is what I came up with using the stamp set Family and Friends, for my first card of 2019.

Hula Girl Thank You Card

Isn’t this little hula girl cute? I just love the Family and Friends stamp set! With this set you can design personalized creations in a matter of minutes. This set comes with 40 individual stamps that you can use to create many different people and animal images of all shapes and sizes. You might think that lining up all the small pieces would be difficult but it’s not! That is because I used our awesome Stamparatus tool to line things up and it was easy breezy!

The background of this card was created with the fabulous Tropical Chic stamp set. I stamped the leaves and flowers in Real Red, Mint Macaroon and Tranquil Tide ink.

The skirt of this card was simple to create. I just took a piece of our playful Leaf Ribbon and cut off three leaves using Paper Snips. Then I used Mini Glue Dots to adhere them to the body. I used a Real Red Stampin’ Blends marker to draw in a bikini top and added a jeweled Real Red flower embellishment to the hair. The flower was made by using one of the punches that comes in the Bitty Blooms Punch Pack which is on page 25 of our new Occasions Catalog.

Well, its time for me to go and fill out a few of these cards so I can put them in the mail tomorrow. I hope that when those who receive one see this sweet little hula girls face, it will brighten their day before they even read the words of gratitude written inside.

I hope you are inspired to give the Family and Friends stamp set a chance and make some personalized creations of your own!

Stamped Blessings for a Happy New Year!

Congratulations Kalani

A few nights ago we had a fun family night. It was our first since we officially became “empty nesters”. It was wonderful having the kids over for dinner and some fun games. I am so grateful that although the kids are not living at home anymore, they are still on the island and we still have opportunities to gather together for fun, food and fellowship.

While we were together we celebrated a job promotion that Kalani had just received. In fact the very next day he was scheduled to begin his new position at work. Kalani is a CPA. So since he works with numbers, I thought it would be best to create his card with the fancy “numbers” sheet from our Broadway Bound Specialty Designer Series Paper!

It’s hard to tell in the photo but the numbers are really bright and shiny. I added some texture to the card using one of our newer Textured Impressions Embossing Folders that is called, Maps, etc. The sentiment on this card comes from a beautiful stamp set called Friendly Expressions!

It’s been hard with out the kids being around as much. The house is so quiet. So when we get together it makes me so happy. I am glad that we were able to gather to not only enjoy family time together but also to say congratulations to Kalani.
