Calls For A Celebration

One of my childhood memories is seeing my Dad leading songs at church. He would encourage the congregation to open up their hymnals and would lead them in worship. My Dad would sing with all of his heart. His smile and energy was contagious. It was evident in how he led, that he knew God and loved to worship Him.

The other day while visiting my Dad I played some old hymns for him. His eyes lit up and he smiled and began to try and sing along. It was a precious moment especially because my Dad has dementia and really doesn’t talk very much anymore.

My Dad may be non verbal but he still continues to teach me valuable life lessons by his example. He shows me that no matter what I face I should not let anything steal my joy. He may be quiet and not have the same energy level as he had before but he continues to smile despite the challenges he faces and that alone demonstrates his faith in God and the glad heart that he has.

For his 86th birthday we took him out for breakfast at the Disney Aulani Resort in Kapolei. The Ama Ama Restaurant at the Aulani is one of our favorite places to go to celebrate. Its less than 10 minutes from home and from the moment you arrive you feel the Disney Magic in how you are greeted and cared for.

I found a cute Disney themed gift bag to wrap my Dad’s birthday gift in, so naturally I had to make the card to match. “Matchy-Matchy” thats what I do!!

I used the classic “Mickey” colors for the card stock. They are Real Red, Basic Black, Daffodil Delight and Whisper White.

Here is a close up of the card.

I die cut the number 86 using my Big Shot and my Large Number Framelits. I then glued them to a Mickey shape that I created by using 2 Circle Punches. I embossed the Daffodil Delight card stock with the Scattered Sequins Dynamic Textured Impressions Embossing folder to add texture. I then applied Twinkle Adhesive Backed Star Embellishments all over the front of the card.

Inside the card I stamped this sentiment:

“You are pretty much the greatest of all time in the history of ever”

When it comes to describing my Dad, this stamp from the set “Calls for a Celebration” expresses exactly how I feel about my wonderful Dad.

When Kalani and I went to visit my Dad the other day, he had just received this fun hat from my brother Glen as a birthday gift. When Kalani and I arrived my Dad was sitting on the couch, wearing his new hat as well as a pair of new sun glasses, inside the house. So Kalani or “Mr. K” as my Dad used to call him when he could talk, left his hat and glasses on too, so we could take this picture of the two of them together.

Kalani and my Dad have always been really close, so I know its especially hard on him to see my Dad in his current condition. I hope that like me, my kids will be encouraged by the way they see my Dad continue to stay positive despite the challenges he faces. It’s hard though, we all miss his stories so much.

Happy Birthday Dad!

I love my Dad so much!!! I am so grateful that I had another opportunity to celebrate with him. After all, turning 86 is certainly something that Calls For A Celebration!

Tropical Escape

Last week I had the opportunity to spend the day with a group of Maui Big Shots.  They made a "Tropical Escape" to Oahu for the day to spend time with me and come to my monthly Bunco gathering.

Stampin' Friends

Stampin' Friends

Since they arrived first thing in the morning, I took them to one of my favorite places to go for breakfast.  The Ama Ama Restaurant at the Disney Aulani Hotel.   The restaurant is designed to feel like you are in a beachside house, the views from every table in this open restaurant are incredible.

Their food is really good too.  Cheryl was excited to order a pancake that had vanilla macadamia nut syrup.

Cheryl brought Mary and Beth, two of her team members with her.  I hadn't met them before and it was so wonderful to get to know them both.  It became apparent very quickly that I was in good company with these lovely ladies.

Since Zeny was coming to Bunco that day, she joined us too and we all had such a great time fellowshipping together.

As we talked I was reminded of how blessed I am to have made such wonderful, caring, creative friends because of my association with Stampin' Up!  I am still amazed that these three invested their time and money to come over just for the day!  It was so wonderful to spend time with them.

After breakfast and a little shopping at the Aulani gift shop we headed to my stamp studio.  We sat and shared some more until it was time to start bunco.

At Bunco that day our theme was Tropical Escape and featured products from this amazing new catalog suite.

For my Aloha Prize that day I designed a pizza box filled with 3 x 3 Thank You Cards.  Here is what the pizza box looked like on the outside.

Inside the box were four different cards that all featured a different piece of the beautiful Tropical Escape Designer Series Paper.  All of these cards were Thank You cards.  The Designer Paper on these cards was 2 3/4 x 2 3/4 so I was able to make four of the same card out of each sheet of the Designer Paper.  Here are the four simple card designs I created.

Each guest took home one card and one lucky winner took home a pizza box that was filled with all four designs.

Our Bunco prize table looked the most beautiful it ever has because of these gorgeous protea flowers my friends from Maui brought for me.

Aren't they breathtaking?  They were the perfect accent to this display of Bunco party favors and Bunco prizes.

At Monday Bunco, I was blessed with flowers again.  This time it was this beautiful Kahili ginger that Becky brought me.  This flower came from her garden and it smelled amazing!

I am going to be on the look out for this ginger next time I go to the nursery, I would love to grow these in my yard.

Both Sunday and Monday Bunco was so fun this month.  I am grateful for special time spent with friends to enjoy food, fellowship, encouragement, laughter and fun!

I loved creating these cute little Tropical cards.  I will definitely make more of these as I think this set makes a fabulous gift.

I am thankful for all the friends who came over to play bunco this month, especially the three  Maui Big Shots whose "Tropical Escape" made our Tropical Escape Bunco extra special this month.

Mickey and Minnie Box

This past Friday evening Derek and I headed out to a beautiful estate in Waialua to attend Kalani and Joyce's wedding rehearsal.  The venue Kalani and Joyce chose was a gorgeous property and it was a beautiful night.

When we arrived we were so excited to see the bridal party.  It was great to see some of Kalani's High School buddies who we hadn't seen in YEARS!!!  They all looked so handsome and grown up!

The rehearsal went really well.  The coordinator was really amazing and she led the happy couple through each step of what would happen the next day.

There were lots of smiles all around as we prepared for the next day's special event.

After rehearsal Derek and I hosted a rehearsal dinner at Roy's Koolina which is one of our favorite places to celebrate.  I got there a little ahead of the bridal party to surprise Kalani and Joyce with favors for the table.

Wedding Rehearsal Box

Wedding Rehearsal Box

This box was made out of Whisper White card stock.  I embossed the top layer with the Layered Leaves Dynamic Textured Impressions folder.  I then stamped an image from a brand new set that will be coming out in January called Love You Still.  I punched out the words with a circle punch and then layered them onto a champagne foil circle.  I made the flower and leaves with 4 different punches and embellished the center with a rhinestone.

When it came to designing this favor I knew exactly what I wanted to do.  Since Kalani and Joyce will be honeymooning on a Disney Cruise, I choose cookies from the Aulani Disney resort as the favor content . Honolulu Cookie Company has the best cookies that are usually pineapple shaped.   I often bring these amazing cookies with me when I travel to give as gifts to others.  I think these exclusive Mickey shaped ones that are sold at Aulani are absolutely adorable.

I punched out the Mr. and Mrs. from the set Cheers To The Year.  This is a cute set is only available till the end of the month.

Here is a template that Zeny created that you can use to recreate this Mickey and Minnie box.

It has been a very exciting few days for us as a family.  We are excited for Joyce to officially join our family and for her and Kalani to begin their life together as man and wife.

I hope that they both liked this sweet suprise favor that was stamped with aloha with best wishes for a life lived happily ever after.

Father's Day

This weekend we celebrated Father's Day.  As I opened up the card I made for my Dad, tears flowed as I thought about what I wanted to say to him.  My Dad has dementia, so although he still reads, I am not sure of all he understands.  He can't really communicate with us that much anymore.  This is really hard because my Dad was the social one in our family.  He was the one who was always reaching out to others, inviting strangers to lunch after church, helping those in need, sacrificing time to serve others, etc.  He was also a story teller and loved to make everyone smile and laugh.  He told us some of the same stories a thousand times, what I'd give to hear him tell them just one more time!

My Dad set such a great example for me to follow and I'm thankful that I'm still learning from him today.

Since my recent diagnosis with breast cancer, I understand what it means to have to find joy in the midst of your circumstances.  To remain positive and strong.  These are lessons I learned from my Dad and even lessons he continues to teach me now.  He may not be able to communicate but he still smiles and laughs and he even has a funny motion he does with  his arms where he imitates an umpire waving his arms to signal that the runner is safe at first base.  I think this is his way of letting us all know, he is good, he is safe and there is no reason for worry or fear.

For Father's Day, I wanted to use new product to create his card.  I love the new vintage looking designer paper called Birthday Memories.  So I decided to fussy cut one of the images that reminded me of my Dad and  make it the focal point of the card.  This is what I came up with.

This paper is so adorable.  I love every piece in this vintage style birthday pack.  This card was simple because I just made a color block background with an embossed piece of Old Olive card stock and a piece of Designer Series Paper from the Birthday Memories pack.  The letters on the Balloon that spell, "D-A-D" are from the stamp set Guy Greetings.

For my Dad's gift bag, I took one of my favorite pieces of the Birthday Memories pack and cut it into a large rectangle and did nothing more but to back it with a card stock and mount it to a pre made blank gift bag I already had.  The paper is so adorable on its own there is nothing more I needed to do than just to mount it and add the sentiment,  Happy Father's Day!

This card and gift was so simple to make!  So, I was inspired to make another card for my husband.  This one required more fussy cutting but it was worth it cause I just love how it turned out.

This card could be use to celebrate Father's Day, a husbands birthday or even to celebrate an engagement.  "Hip Hip Hooray, a husband is on the way".  All of these are very good reasons to celebrate, don't you think?

I used a part of a new Textured impressions embossing folder called, "Sweetheart", to make the grass that this fun parade is taking place on.

For the inside of the card I added another layer of card stock that I cut and made into a pop up card.

This allowed me space to add the Father's Day greeting and the words "let's celebrate your day".

I made a matching bag for my husbands gift as well.

My husband is such a great Dad.  I watch how he speaks into the lives of our children with so much patience and wisdom.  He is such a hard worker, he never complains and everyday he selflessly reminds us of how much he loves us by the way he cares for us.

He has especially shown that to me as he's been by my side for me these past few weeks encouraging me every step of the way.  With my new much slower paced schedule I am so glad that I've had more quality time with him to let him know how much he is loved and appreciated.

On Sunday afternoon, we had a really enjoyable lunch together at the Disney Hotel near our home.  Kalani was on a business trip so he couldn't be with us this time and we missed him.  We realize that time is precious and it becomes increasingly difficult to find moments where we can all be together, which are my favorite times.

When I gave my Dad his card and gift he smiled as he read the words I wrote.

He may not remember what my name is anymore but I can see the love he has for me in the way his eyes light up when he see's me.  It's the same way he is with everyone.  He smiles, laughs and repeats what we say, always with joy.

I know my Dad has joy because of his relationship with Christ.  I grew up watching the time he set aside every morning to read his bible and spend time with God.

One of the most precious moments during lunch was when our food arrived.  Without hesitation my Dad grabbed our hands and bowed his head and began to pray.  The words were soft and mumbled but the heart behind the prayer was felt.   Even though my Dad couldn't express his prayer with words he didn't let that stop him from honoring God for His many blessings.

I am glad that although we are both facing health challenges we had the blessing of being together on Father's Day.  Can you tell that we were both feeling great?  It's because we've learned that God is in control, our lives are in his hands and we trust HIm.

I am really thankful for the opportunity we had to celebrate Father's Day together this year.   I really enjoyed creating some fun projects to honor and bless the amazing mentors and leaders God has placed in my life.  For all of them, I am eternally grateful!

However you celebrated, I hope you had a Happy Father's Day!
