My friend Cindy is so special to me. Cindy is as sweet and beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside but capturing a photo of her is a RARE occurrence since she is not a fan of having her picture taken.
Her birthday was late November so we made plans to celebrate it after Thanksgiving at the start of December. Since we had some Christmas Shopping to do we decided to take her to the Magnolia Bakery at Ala Moana. This allowed us to shop a little after which is always fun for us to do when we have the chance.
New York is one of my most favorite places on earth and Magnolia Bakery comes from there, so we were all anxious to go check it out.
Everything in the bakery was so cute. We loved the atmosphere and all the vintage decorations.
We immediately felt like we had made the perfect choice to bring Cindy there because she is so gifted at making treats that are not only amazingly beautiful but taste wonderful too. You can check out some of her creations on her Facebook page at Zoe Hawaii or look for her on instagram.
We had asked Cindy what she wanted for her birthday and she said she was in need of some new shoes for the gym. We decided that the best gift would be to give her cash because we weren't sure of where she wanted to shop for her shoes. Plus being the amazing bargain hunter that she is, she'd probably know just where to go to find $100 shoes on sale for $10. She is just gifted that way! And of course we didn't want to rob her of the opportunity to get more than one pair with her magical shopping skills.
Giving cash isn't always my favorite thing to do but in this case it was the perfect gift for Cindy so I wanted to try and find a way to package it in a creative and fun way.
My first thought was a Nike shoe box. Nike is my favorite brand and I love the bright orange boxes many of their shoes come in.
So, I called my friend Lori who is a box maker extroidenaire and told her that I needed a small box. I described my project idea to her over the phone and she quickly worked her magic and sent me some dimensions to make a small shoe box.
Sigh... I'm so blessed to have such talented friends!!!
Want the directions? Here they are!
SHOE BOX DIRECTIONS Bottom of Box is 5 1/4 x 6 1/2 - Score short side at 1 1/2 and 3 3/4, Score long side at 1 1/2 and 5. Cut on score lines on both sides till the horizontal line.
Top of Box is 3 1/4 x 4 1/2 (add a 1/16" to both measurements so its just a tiny bit bigger but be careful its only a tiny bit or the box top will be too loose) Score all sides at 1/2"
Put bottom together first. Crease all folds and put double stick tape on all four corner flaps close to scoreline and opposite edge. Fold inwards and attach longer middle flap matching edges. Trim any excess.
Repeat for Box Top but attach one side first, place on the box and then attach the flaps to fit snug on the box.
I stamped a small piece of Pumpkin Pie card stock and attached to outside of the box using the B.Y.O.P stamp set which is a wonderful set to use when giving a cash gift. The set comes with all kinds of coordinating stamps so that you can create projects for graduations, baby showers, weddings, birthdays, thank you's, etc.
Inside the box I used the stamp that said, Buy Your Own Present and washi taped it to $20 bills that were folded and washi taped together.
The box I made mimicked a Nike shoe box, complete with a similar hand cut swoosh on the top! On the inside I added a printed a photo of a pair of Nike shoes to complete the project.
Taping money together was an idea I got from a gift my creative friend Pam made me last year. Using washi tape makes it easy because it makes for a fun presentation and it comes right off the money when you are ready to use it.
For Cindy's card I decided to use the set Bear Hugs. I wanted to try and find a way to keep the shoe theme and thought using a stamp image I could dress in a pair of hand drawn shoes would be a fun way to make a coordinating card.
I loved using the framelits to create some leggings and a cute workout shirt for this adorable bear. For the shoes I just cut and colored some shoes with our markers and a scrap of white card stock. I drew some stitches on the shirt and stamped the word Friend from the Jar of Love stamp set on the t-shirt.
Cindy smiled as she opened her card and gift. It made me feel good to know she liked it.
We all had a really enjoyable time eating a light dinner at Magnolia Bakery and the deserts were delicious.
Sadly just a week or so after we had been there we found out that they were closing at the end of the year. We were sad because we had just discovered it and had hoped to return.
So when we look back to that evening we'll just have to count our blessings that we got to go to Magnolia Bakery in Hawaii before it closed. We'll remember how fun it was to celebrate Cindy with friends in a really fun environment.
We'll remember the delicious treats we shared such as this Iced Eggnog Birthday Cupcake.
And be thankful for another fun evening celebrating our beautiful sister and friend to honor her on her special day.
Happy Birthday to you Cindy, you are a treasured blessing to me and such a beautiful and sweet friend. I am SO thankful for you!
